If you are non-technical and are passionate about getting involved in the tech world, being non-technical should not deter you from following that passion. Some of the most successful and known founders were non-technical, including Steve Jobs (Apple), Brian Chesky (AirBnb), and Evan Thomas Spiegel (Snapchat). As a non-technical founder, I have learned and now pass on the knowledge of recruiting the right team, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and having a solid vision, which are all key components for non-technical founders. Those qualities make non-technical founders just as unique and able to build a successful tech company as a technical founder.
When we think of tech, most people will think of the introverted developers who are sitting at their computer with their headphones in and coding away in a zoned-out state. In reality, tech companies consist of way more than just the developer. It takes an entire team with different skills to build a great company. Those positions range from coders to designers, marketing, business sales, and so much more.

Most startups focus on getting an investment from a VC (venture capitalist) or angel investor in order to start (pre-seed) or grow (seed and beyond) their venture. However, getting investment dollars is not the right path for everyone, and unfortunately, many don't always fully understand the pros and cons of raising money. The reality is that for every investment a company takes, the company becomes less and less controlled by the founder or founding team.
The power of bootstrapping is often overlooked and underestimated. With the understanding that bootstrapping is challenging for some because the founder is already financially strapped or without a network or "family and friends." However, bootstrapping is more realistic for everyone in today's digital world and access to AI tools.
Sheena Allen has experience with both. She bootstrapped her first startup, Sheena Allen Apps, to generate revenue and millions of app downloads. In contrast, she raised three rounds of funding for her second startup, CapWay. With her experience, Sheena can attest to the pros and cons of each side.
Key lessons from this talk include:
The reality behind raising money is less control, pressure to get returns, etc.
Other ways of raising funds outside of traditional venture capitalists
How to bootstrap as long as you can

Women and minorities are still fighting to be respected in the tech world. For a culture that has been dominated by the “bro-code” of mainly white men, having diversity in the room is becoming more and more of a demand, with numbers showing that more diverse teams are more successful. From lack of respect to lack of funding, being a minority in tech has been an uphill battle. Though small victories have been won, there is still a long way to go.
Sheena often has spoken about walking in rooms and realizing she has three strikes against her. She’s black, she’s a female, and she’s from Mississippi, a place a lot of the rest of the world think consists of only racists and poorly educated minorities. If three strikes you’re out is supposed to be the standard, when speaking on women and minorities in tech, Sheena talks motivate, provides resources, and provides a guide on how being a woman and minority in tech breaks the standard.

Description text goes hereThe age-old traditional banking system was not made for everyone. With over 2 billion people worldwide considered financially underserved and over half of Americans living paycheck-to-paycheck and relying on predatory services like payday lenders and title loan services to try to make ends meet, financial inclusion has become a hot topic. Sheena speaks on problems ranging from banking deserts, lack of trust in banks, inability to afford the fees associated with many banks, and why millennials have been coined "the unbanked generation." Tech is now ready to significantly impact financial inclusion, but there are still challenges ahead.
Sheena created her second startup, the fintech company CapWay, to tackle issues related to financial inclusion. Technology has a history of disrupting industries, from Uber (taxis) to AirBnB (hotels). It is now time for technology and new leadership to use technology to create access and opportunity for those who don't fit the model designed by traditional banks and governement decades ago.

How many times have you heard someone say, “I have this amazing idea for an app?” Well, a lot of people do! Unfortunately, most people who have the idea do not know the proper steps to take to launch it successfully. While most may guess that finding a freelance developer is the first step, they completely skip over understanding the side of their app that should be well understood before ever reaching out to a developer. Is this a free, freemium, or paid app? What about UI/UX? How many similar apps are already available? Is this for iOS or Android or both? There is so much to mapping out a mobile app idea that should be done before contacting a developer.
Sheena started her first tech company, Sheena Allen Apps, as a senior in college. With no technical background, Sheena bootstrapped her mobile app company to house five apps and generated millions of downloads. In building her company through trial and error, she mastered how to map out the idea of a mobile app before development. Without doing so, the lack of preparation would cost more time and money if development was started prematurely.
Key lessons from this talk include:
Don’t go directly from app idea to app development. That is like having a car (app idea) and tires (app developer) but with no gas (app strategy and mapping)
What the entire app process consists of as you go from idea to deployment in the app store.
Understanding how the App Stores work–Apple AppStore vs. Google Play Store (Android)
How to create a screen flow-chart
The important role of UI/UX
Finding an app developer: What to look for when searching for a reliable app developer; Outsourcing vs offshoring; red flags; checklists before hiring

The interactive workshop, named and operated by App It Out, is working with attendees on successfully launching their app ideas, even if they are non-technical. The workshop is an engaging and hands-on approach starting with validating the app idea, which includes an elevator pitch to test how or if their idea is as well-defined as they think. Throughout the workshop, attendees will better understand UI/UX and sketch out pages of their mobile app, challenge each other on holes in their flow process, complete competitive analysis, discuss funding options, traction, hiring developers, and prepare for marketing before and after launching their app.
The workshop is ideal for businesses without an internal technical team and looking to get software developed or individuals who are non-technical but would like to launch an app or website.
